Spent Day 1 on the tourist track in rainy Sydney, and quite enjoyed despite the jet lag. The inner city green spaces are full of exotic birds and palm trees, and every street seems to have a different style of architecture. The galleries are interesting and I'd love to come back once the Art Gallery of New South Wales expansion (Sydney Modern Project) has been completed - the selected proposal by Japanese studio SANAA looks really impressive. The food is great and wish I'd had more time to explore the different areas of the city. We randomly opted for a half hour harbour cruise over to Cockatoo Island which has an eerily deserted industrial shipyard area which played a part in war defence and has an interesting history of holding convicts. Obvious stops at the Opera House (which I didn't expect to be ceramic tile) and the bridge were really cool to see in person as well.
